An independent audit has found theft and widespread abuse of government gas pumps in the city of Atlanta. One investigator said the abuse could cost taxpayers more than $1 million.
The audit examined a two year period where 7.5 million gallons were dispensed at a cost of $23 million dollars. The audit noted inadequate security; the system enables a user to fuel a vehicle other than the one linked to an electronic gas key device.
It also says that retired workers are continuing to fill up -- $66,500 of gas was recorded from one retired employee.
Investigators say they were told that security cameras either did not work or they were not able to retrieve any surveillance video.
Auditors gave recommendations on how to tighten controls at the pump. However, FOX 5's Morse Diggs was told that the auditors were told by city officials that there was no money to institute the changes.
A spokesperson for Atlanta Public Works Commissioner Richard Mendoza told Morse that Mendoza will be available to answer questions about the audit soon.
