Police hope to make the streets safe for drivers this Thanksgiving holiday.
A new study from the University of Alabama says drivers are 20 percent more likely to die in a fatal accident the Wednesday before Thanksgiving than any other day. That risk is even greater between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m.
Authorities said most traffic accidents could be prevented if people would just buckle up that seat belt.
Peachtree City police were out on Wednesday making sure holiday travelers were wearing their seat belts. The department recently won a statewide honor for traffic enforcement from the Governor's Office of Highway Safety. They've found alcohol, speed and lack of seat belts contributed to fatal accidents all year long, but because more people are out on the road during the holidays, the number of crashes jumps. And when alcohol is involved, the amount consumed is much, much greater.
"Not only are they alcohol-impaired drivers, two-thirds of them were somebody with a [blood alcohol content ) in excess of .15," said Peachtree City Police Lt. Matt Meyers. "That's very intoxicated. That's not a little bit, that's not like I've had a little too much to drink -- .15 is a very high BAC but the legal limit here in Georgia and just like every other state is .08."
Officials said the keys to driver safety are slow down, buckle up and don't drive and drive.
