Atlanta city officials reopened a busy stretch of Howell Mill Road Wednesday night, but say the repair of a sinkhole will just be a temporary fix.
Public works crews are still working to figure out what caused the intersection of Howell Mill Road and 14th Street in northwest Atlanta to sink.
Officials told FOX 5's Morse Diggs that the sinkhole is about 4-6 inches deep, and is located in the 1100 block of Howell Mill Road near 14th Street. A crack could also be seen in the road, which is a bridge that crosses railroad tracks. Authorities say the bridge is safe, and there is no structural damage to it.
Workers spent the day trying to figure out what caused the sinkhole to develop.
The Department of Watershed Management said it was not due to a water leak, and instead is a Department of Public Works issue. A business owner in the area noted that there was construction in the area on Tuesday, and that the crack in the road was first noticed after some blasting occurred.
Merchants who own some popular boutique shops on the west side worried their Black Friday sales could suffer if the road remained closed. They say they don't want holiday shoppers to be turned away.
Crews will return on Monday to try and determine the cause and make a permanent fix.
