ATLANTA -

A local Atlanta church is continuing an annual tradition to help their community during the holiday season. Cascade United Methodist Church  is giving out a week's worth of groceries to 600 families in the community.

Work began early as volunteers began serving the groceries to grateful families on Monday.

"It's a blessing for Thanksgiving and the prices in the grocery stores [are] pretty extreme, so it came at the right time," said Chessey Mathis.

Taron Johnson says what this church is doing for the community is beyond words. Johnson, who said she can't find a job, has a big family and says if it were not for the church and members her family would have a different Thanksgiving.

"We were just going to be hungry this year for Thanksgiving," Johnson said.

Each box costs around $100 and is made possible by member donations, corporate sponsorships and other donations.

Each family receives turkey, milk, eggs and a cardboard box that includes food for a week.

Church members say that the 625 families that they have helped a record high. In fact they say they have another 100 plus families still on the wait list that they wish they could help.
