The race for sheriff in Rockdale County was so close that it took provisional and military ballots to decide it.
More than 37,000 votes were cast in the race Tuesday. Republican incumbent Jeff Wigington had an 18-vote lead based on those ballots. But Democratic challenger Eric Levett took the lead by 34 votes when military and provisional ballots were counted Friday evening.
The vote tally was 18,760 to 18,726.
Wigington has been sheriff for 16 years.
Levett is a sergeant in the Rockdale County Sheriff's Department. His victory completes a Democratic sweep with the party replacing Republicans in the races for magistrate court, probate court, tax commissioner and coroner.
