Former Richmond County Sheriff Charles B. Webster has died after a long career in law enforcement and serving for decades as a political force in the county.
Sheriff Ronnie Strength said the former sheriff died Saturday at his home from complications from liver cancer. He was 80.
Webster served as a state revenue agent before his election as sheriff in 1984. He was re-elected to three more terms.
Former Augusta Mayor Larry Sconyers told The Augusta Chronicle (http://bit.ly/TpoWMP ) that Webster was the last of the last of a group of political kingmakers who used to meet every Saturday at a restaurant. Sconyers said Webster was a natural politician and a mentor to him.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
