Proctor & Gamble to shift some jobs from GA plant

AUGUSTA, Ga. -

Officials with Proctor & Gamble say they are shifting its powdered-detergent operations from Augusta to a facility in Louisiana.

The Augusta Chronicle reported Friday that company officials say the move will result in about 160 job losses in the Augusta area over the next 12 to 18 months. The officials say many of those employees will be offered jobs at other company locations in the U.S.

The company says the Augusta plant will continue to manufacture dryer bars with about 40 employees.

The company is moving the detergent-powder operations to a plant in Alexandria, La., which will add about 50 jobs. The Louisiana plant already makes liquid detergent.

The Augusta plant went into production in February 1963.
