A metro Atlanta town remembers one of its favorite sons and war heroes by naming a section of a major thoroughfare in his honor
Lance Cpl. Scott Harper was killed in Afghanistan last October while saving a fellow Marine's life. Thousands of people lined the streets of Douglasville when he was laid to rest.
Now his hometown renamed one of the roads on his funeral procession in his honor.
Douglasville Mayor Harvey Person oversaw the dedication ceremony giving a section of Douglas Boulevard a new name. He presented the declaration to Brian Harper, the fallen Marine's father. Choked up, he remarked how proud he was of his son and thanked everyone at the ceremony before he and his wife unveiled the sign.
During the ceremony, a young Marine stood watch over the wreath laid in Lance Cpl. Harper's memory.
Scott was still in high school when he came here to Arbor Place Mall to enlist with the Marines. His father says he wasn't surprised.
The honor was bestowed on the hometown here a day before the Marine Corp marks their birthday and the weekend where all veterans are honored.
