Police use Apple iCloud to track down burglars

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Police say thieves went after high tech equipment when they burglarized an Atlanta home. It turns out that very equipment was used to track the thieves down and lock them up.

The video shows the men dressed in green pretend to be workmen as they checked the home to see if anyone was home.  After no one responded, a driver was given the signal to back a car up to the door. The video then shows the group approach the door and give another check. Then one of the young men kicks the door open.

The men then carefully bring out the resident's property -- TVs and other electronics.

"One of the items that was taken out of the house was a laptop computer, and on most Apple products or all Apple products you have what is called iCloud where you can track items like that," said Lt. Rod Woody of the Atlanta Police Department.

That afternoon police tracked the men to a hotel in Tucker. The alleged burglars got a surprise when Atlanta and DeKalb police came to their hotel room.

The homeowner said she is pleased with the work done by detectives. She said that she got most of her items back undamaged.
