NORCROSS, Ga. -

Gwinnett police say a county school resource officer was hit by a vehicle near Meadowcreek High School late Thursday morning.

Cpl. Jake Smith of the Gwinnett County Police Department says that Officer Chuck McCallum had been called to assist after a fight in the lunchroom. School officials said that several students involved in that fight had left the school. The 53-year-old officer was chasing those students when he was struck by vehicle driven by another student.

Students pointed responding officers to the vehicle, which had fled the scene and was returning in the opposite direction, Smith said.  An officer pursued the vehicle. The vehicle's driver lost control and crashed the car through a stone sign and down an embankment before coming to a rest in the woods. The suspect then allegedly took off from the car into the woods. After a short chase, he was apprehended and was identified as 17-year-old Jarvis Ruff.

Authorities said that McCallum, who works in the Norcross Cluster, suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Ruff faces numerous charges, including hit-and-run, reckless driving and no driver's license.

School officials are still searching for three other students who left campus after the fight.
