AUGUSTA, Ga. (AP) - Democratic Rep. John Barrow is leading his Republican challenger in his tough race for re-election in east Georgia's 12th District.
Unofficial returns Tuesday showed Barrow of Augusta with 54% of the vote. He led Republican state Rep. Lee Anderson of Grovetown with 64% of precincts reporting.
After four terms in the House, Barrow faces his toughest re-election fight after GOP state lawmakers redrew the district to favor a Republican. Barrow played up his independent record in hopes of attracting GOP voters.
Republicans hoped to oust Barrow after gaining a U.S. House seat in north Georgia. State Rep. Doug Collins of Gainesville defeated Democrat Jody Cooley in the new 9th District.
Georgia picked up the district from population growth in the 2010 Census.
