ATLANTA (AP) - Republican Rep. Jack Kingston of Savannah has defeated a Democratic challenger to win an 11th term in Congress.
Unofficial election returns Tuesday showed Kingston defeating Democratic newcomer Leslie Messinger with 74% of the vote. That's with 23% of precincts reporting.
With a seat on the powerful House Appropriations Committee, Kingston has become such a formidable incumbent that GOP lawmakers last year redrew his 1st District seat last year to add more Democratic voters - a move that improved prospects for fellow Republicans in neighboring districts.
Messinger, a Savannah business owner, hoped to attract women voters in her first political race but had little chance of spreading her message. Her campaign was almost entirely self-funded, while Kingston had more than $1.1 million to spend.
