Montaluce offers a bit of Italy in Dahlonega

DAHLONEGA, Ga. -

Tucked away in the north Georgia mountains is a slice of Italy. Montaluce is one of several wineries cropping up in Georgia, but it has a lot more to offer than just red and white.

It could be the heart of Italy with iconic vineyards, villas, and presidential election signs?

"It's a hidden little Tuscan Village up here in North Georgia," said General Manager Warren Robertson.

Montaluce is located in Dahlonega, and may not sound as exotic as Tuscany. But a grape is a grape.

"Our Super Georgian, which is a red blend, a little take on a Super Tuscan wine. It will stand together with anything from France or California," said Robertson.

Montaluce is a working winery, restaurant, and event space.  You can sip a glass of wine, and see where it comes from.

"Every day at 2:00 we do a complementary tour, it's about 20-30 minutes, fairly information, we take you through the winery out into the vineyard," said Robertson.

Even if you don't drink wine, or don't like wine, there's still plenty to do. That's why Montaluce is such a cool weather getaway.  There are 400 acres to walk through and explore and do a little taste-testing.

Winemaker Maria Peterson might not want you chomping her grapes

"I see grapes in the grocery store, I'm like, what were they thinking selling that stuff here!  It's supposed to be made wine of," said Peterson.

But she'll gladly show you around the vineyard. You can also hike the property and enjoy the season's spectacular fall colors. If it gets a little too chilly, there's always a fire and a great seat waiting inside.

"These windows are floor to ceiling.  There's not a bad table in the house," said Robertson.

There are many other Georgia wineries that offer beautiful scenery and tours. A good place to start your search is through the state's official tourism website.
