Is a new stadium in the Atlanta Falcons' future?

ATLANTA -

The buzz surrounding the Atlanta Falcons extends much deeper than their current unblemished record. NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell was in town, and spoke with city leaders about a possible future home for the Falcons.

Goodell met with Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed and team owner Arthur Blank behind closed doors at the governor's office on Monday.

The purpose of the meeting was to get a status report on negotiations for a new billion dollar stadium for the Falcons. Talks have been under way for some time for prospects for a new facility. Discussions have centered on a couple of potential sites, and also how public and private money would pay for it, including the use of the Atlanta hotel-motel tax.

"We've had a very strong history of building new facilities across the league. Those facilities have been important to us. Not only in keeping those teams competitive, but also in giving our fans the kind of facilities where we can encourage our people to come to the stadium, and enjoy the games, and the kinds of public-private partnerships that have been built around the country are the kinds that I am hearing about that are going on here," said Goodell.

As for the city's hotel-motel tax, Reed said it "is not a tax increase of any kind. And it's not being borne on the backs of people that live in the city of Atlanta or the 10-county area. It's primarily being borne by visitors."

The meeting at the governor's office lasted about 40 minutes. More meetings will follow as all sides work toward an agreement for a new stadium that would go up near the current Georgia Dome.
