A strange man confronted a 12-year-old girl in her Virginia Highland home on Thursday, police said.

According to Officer John Chafee of the Atlanta Police Department, the girl went inside to retrieve an item around 9 a.m. She did not shut the door because she was planning to leave quickly.

The man slipped in the house behind her through an open door and ordered the girl upstairs. she screamed, pushed the man out of the way and ran out the house.

The girl ran outside unharmed.

News of the frightening ordeal sent shockwaves through the community.

"It's just terrible. When I was growing up, we never had a key to our house. We were out in the neighborhood all day long, and it's frustrating that children have to be watched so closely now," said Austin Tucker.

As police search for the suspect, Traci Didier and other parents are having serious talks with their kids.

"I tell my kids, first of all, you are not allowed to go back home after they've gone to school alone.  Second of all, make sure, if you ever are in that situation, you always lock the door behind you.  It's extremely important. You never know, never know," said Didier.

Police say the white male, described as having a large build, got into a gold sedan and fled. He appeared to be in his 30s with blond hair. He had on a blue jacket and blue jeans.

Residents are asked to call police if they see him.
