DECATUR, Ga. -

With only five days to go until the election, a group of students are encouraging people to get out and vote.

The students in Megan Houman's third grade class at Clairemont Elementary School class in Decatur have a found a way to be involved in the political process, even though they are almost a decade away from actually being eligible to cast a vote themselves.

"We realized that 50 percent of the people that could vote, voted in the last election, and so since it's so close to the election we decided to do a PSA about voting," said student Hannah Choi.

The public service announcement is just one way the school promotes active learning and teamwork, focusing as much on the process as the destination.

"It's very student centered, so even though the teachers have an idea of where it's going to go and we integrate a lot of the Georgia performance standards and the common core within that, the kids, it's very student friendly," said Houman.

The finished product was written and produced by the students. The concept was a collaborative effort, with the goal to illustrate what they've learned about the roots of democracy.

"First we just brainstormed ideas. Then we got into groups of four or five, I can't remember, and we made up ideas," said student Brayden Gordon

"My group actually came up with the idea that we could all dress up as like something funny with mustaches and sunglasses like adults," said student Linda Soler.

"Most schools, or like private schools, are open your textbook to page 945. And you have to write papers about it but we did a commercial and we're making it more fun to learn about," said Gordon.

"I'm telling my parents about this. I'm telling my siblings. I'm telling my grandparents. I'm writing letters to people to vote. I just want to follow this because I'm a third grader. It's close to the election. We're studying democracy. I just really want to follow this," said Choi.

When asked if she would one day run for president, she said she couldn't because she was born in South Korea.

Houman says the goal of the project was to get the kids to think for themselves, and illustrate that even though they are youngsters, they can still make a difference. If you'd like to see their public service announcement in its entirety, click here!
