The city of Atlanta has agreed to pay $40,000 to settle a lawsuit filed by a woman who accused a police officer of flirting with her.
Lynn Walker and her 9-year-old daughter say they were leaving a Slater Elementary honor roll ceremony and were walking home when a police officer pulled his cruiser to her side and started flirting. When she walked away to get across the street, she was arrested for jaywalking.
State Sen. Vincent Fort (D-Atlanta) reminded City Council members that there have been too many cases where police have abused their power.
"What is going over at the APD that police officers think that it's their purview to stop a mother on the way home with her baby, with her child, and harass her and arrest her when she doesn't succumb to his overtures," said Fort.
The public safety panel of the council was told her claim for wrongful arrest and humiliation should be settled for $40,000.
"As the final world I hope Ms. Walker and her daughter especially will recover from the trauma they experienced at the hand of that officer. I hope she will," said Fort.
There was an administrative review of the complaint. The department came back and sustained the complaint. There was punishment handed down, but the punishment just a one-day suspension. In the federal lawsuit, her lawyer noted that that punishment was way too light.
