ATLANTA -

Some metro Atlanta high school students are riding out the superstorm in New York City.

Members of three mock trial teams from three separate high schools are in the Big Apple for the Empire VI Mock Trial Invitational. Students from Atlanta International School, Grady High School and Jonesboro High School are representing their respective schools in the mock trial competition.

The schools told FOX 5 News that they had plans to come back on Monday, but that might change due to the approach of Sandy.

Members of the Jonesboro High School team talked to FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor via Skype on Monday that they were hunkered down in a hotel room in Brooklyn watching the storm from their window.

"From our view up here, it's really windy.  Some things are being blown away. Stuff is coming off roofs. It's just really windy and looks gloom," said one student.

Fifteen students and five chaperones have bought lots of supplies and are holed up in the Brooklyn hotel, where they say FEMA has also set up shop.

Atlanta International School headmaster Kevin Glass told FOX 5 News that their team, which came in 5th place in the world championship, has stocked up on food, water, and other supplies while they stay in their New York hotel. Glass said they originally were planning to fly home Monday, but had to reschedule their flight for Wednesday due to the cancellations.

"I am sure they are having a lot of meteorological discussions and conversations.  It's a huge part of the curriculum here at the Atlanta International School. I'm sure that we're going to be mining them for their experiences across the school when they come back," said Glass.

A spokesperson for Atlanta Public Schools said their team from Grady High School is in a similar situation.
