SMYRNA, Ga. -
A Smyrna woman was arrested in Texas for allegedly trying to smuggle $500,000 worth of drugs into the U.S.
Customs agents have not released the name of the 20-year-old woman.
They said that she was caught with five pounds each of heroin and crystal meth in her possession as she tried to get into the U.S. at the Lincoln-Juarez Bridge in Laredo, Texas.
Customs spokesman Rick Pauza says the woman tried to hide the drugs in a table she had declared.
Authorities wouldn't say if the woman had a prior drug or criminal history. However, the cash amount of the drugs she tried to smuggle was significant.
"The drugs have a street value of about a little over a half million dollars and the lady was turned over to Homeland Security investigations for further investigation," Pauza said.
The woman was traveling with her 4-year-old son when the incident occurred. Pauza says she has made her initial court appearance and is awaiting her detention hearing. Her son is now with child protective services.
