Roller Derby girls skate for Athens-area charities

ATHENS, Ga. -

Roller Derby is a sport that is not for the faint of heart, and it's also not for boys. The sport is making a comeback, and it's turning everyday women into villains on wheels.

The girls on the professional roller derby team in Athens, Classic City Rollergirls, have normal jobs during the day, but when the don their skates, it's a different ball game.

Here's how it works. There's a set of blockers and two jammers. The jammers get a point for each blocker they pass, but a good blocker won't let that happen.

"So they block them. They hit them. They just get in their way, anything you can do to keep your points," said Alicin Hendricks, known as Lolli Maehamm on the team.

The girls on the team are as diverse as their names. One is a nurse, another a student, and another works in public health.

The girls say alter egos are what make it fun. Hendricks works in online advertising during the day, but three times a week, she's Lolli Maehamm.

"Me, in real life, is not at all who I am on the track. I'm a completely different person and it's amazing. I go to work all day and I can't wait until practice at night. I can't wait to come and hit girls, it's so much fun," said Hendricks.

Regardless of what it looks like, it rarely gets personal. The girls are professional athletes.

"I love how every practice, they come out and they are making the strongest effort to give it 110 percent every single practice. You just don't get to run into that very often," said Hendricks.

It's not all hip-checks and jammer-blocking. The Classic City Rollergirls are committed to volunteering and fundraising. They donate a portion of their bout proceeds to Athens-area charities. For more information on the team, click here!
