A man was killed in an industrial accident inside the Pilgrim's Pride chicken plant in Canton, Ga. on Tuesday, according to police.
Authorities said that Cherokee County Sheriff's deputies were called to the plant, located on Univeter Road, around 2 p.m. Investigators said that something had fallen into a piece of machinery and the 37-year-old man had tried to retrieve it. He then somehow got trapped between two machines and was killed on-site.
The victim's family lives out of state and police have not been able to reach them, so his name has not been released.
The man's friend, Steven Stringer, said that the man was a Coast Guard veteran. Stringer says he found about the job at the chicken plant and the two men started together about a month ago.
"I told him about the job, we started here together. We went to Georgia Labor together and we filled the application out and they called us the same day," said Stringer.
Another employee was transported to the hospital. Police say he was overcome with emotion after the accident but is expected to be fine.
Pilgrim's Pride said hat grief counselors will be brought in for employees.
Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are investigating the accident, but foul play is not suspected.
