Hungry sheep, goats graze invasive plants at Candler Park

ATLANTA -

More than 100 sheep and goats are taking part in a beautification project at Candler Park in northeast Atlanta this weekend. The animals are an Earth-friendly solution to get rid of invasive plants such as kudzu, poison ivy and privet in the ravine near McClendon Avenue.

"It's a perfect green solution where they're eating the plants and getting rid of them and making space for the native plants that we can bring back in here," said Mark Clement of Friends of Candler Park.

The animals will remain at the park on an acre of land for the next five days. A border collie and a guard dog will help keep them safe.

Brian Williams of Trees Atlanta said the animals are a better solution than using herbicide.

Kids enjoyed seeing the animals on Friday.

"I think it's neat that they're over here," said 6-year-old Harper Barcik.

"I've been chasing them and trying to pet them," said 6-year-old Tybee Parish-Letteer.

Each sheep can eat up to 100 square feet of kudzu.

The animals will make at least two more return visits in the spring for more grazing.

The Sweetwater Brewery Company teamed up with Friends of Candler Park, Trees Atlanta, and Ewe-niversially Green for the project.
