A 7-year-old boy is recovering after allegedly being roughed up by the father of one of his football teammates. The boy's family wants more done to punish the suspect.
Jamarius Baynes has suffered headaches and pains in his back ever since being roughed up allegedly by the father of one of his teammates.
Last week, Jamarius' football team was warming up for a game on a baseball field at the Newton County Recreation Center. He and some of the boys started horsing around and things go out of hands. That's when the father of one of the boys allegedly stepped in and got physical with Jamarius.
"He picked him up by the ankle and slammed him on the ground and kicked in the head on the helmet," said Tamarian Baynes, Jamarius' brother.
The field manager called police. They interviewed the father, who told officers that Jamarius used obscenities and made obscene gestures. He claimed that the coaches wouldn't do anything about it, so he grabbed the 7-year-old.
The officer gave the family the choice of filing either simple battery or disorderly conduct charges -- both of them misdemeanors. Parents said those charges aren't enough.
"I would've felt better if he said assault charge or cruelty to children. I would felt better with that," said Taurus Baynes, the boy's father.
The Covington Police Department had no idea the parents were upset with the disorderly conduct charge until they heard it from FOX 5.
"We will certainly contact the mother and discuss the options, and conduct a further investigation, but this is news to us," said Captain Ken Malcolm of the Covington Police Department.
In addition to his troubles with law, the father will likely be banned from the league and park property from between six months to a year.
