A 100-foot pine tree collapsed onto a home in northwest Atlanta on Thursday. Neighbors said the fallen tree could have been avoided.
Jerry Miles said the tree hit his home and knocked out the power and cable lines.
Miles says that when he came outside to view the destruction, he realized how fortunate he and his sister were that they were not injured.
"About two feet more and it could have been really bad," said Miles.
The tree that caused all the destruction actually sat on the property of the Holsey Temple Church Property.
Miles and other neighbors said that the tree had leaned dangerously close to power lines for about a week. They say Georgia Power, the city of Atlanta and the Holsey Temple CME Church were all aware the tree desperately needed to come down.
"We were just getting…the runaround about who was going to cut the tree down," said Miles.
Harold Hexter, the church board of trustee chair, says the church was in the process of removing the tree after Georgia Power made it clear they would not.
"I informed him how dangerous this was over the power lines. He said it is on private property and we do not take down trees on private property," said Hexter. "We had selected a company yesterday. They were going to be here on Friday to take it down, but the tree fell today."
Miles said that he will file an insurance claim to help pay for the damage caused by the tree.
