Dramatic video shows a police chase that ended with shots fired toward an officer. US Marshals say they now have the suspected shooter in custody.
Investigators say a Fayette County deputy was shot at by a 22-year-old man he pulled over last week for not wearing a seatbelt.
The veteran deputy first asked for a driver's license from Keith Lake. When a second officer walked up to the car, Lake allegedly took off. After a two minute pursuit, the suspect got out of the car while it was still moving.
"He actually turns to the deputy and points a firearm at the deputy and discharges a round. The deputy did have a Taser in hand and attempted to deploy the Taser. However, he missed and driver fled on foot," said Lt. Brent Rowan of the Fayette County Sheriff's Office.
After a week-long search, Lake was caught in southwest Atlanta by U.S. Marshals and officers from Fayette and Clayton counties.
"We've seen in our career, other scenarios unfold in other jurisdictions and we're just appreciative we're not one of those agencies having to mourn the loss of an officer," said Rowan. "We're just glad it turned out the way it did."
Lake is now being held in jail for aggravated assault against a police officer.
Investigators say the car that lake was driving was connected to a carjacking in another metro Atlanta county just a few days before the chase. Lake is now under investigation for that as well.
