Cherokee County police are asking for the public's help to track down a hit-and-run driver.
Investigators say that a truck hit and killed 31-year-old Larry Ward on Kellogg Creek Road on July 7.
Ward and his wife, Misty, were camping at nearby Lake Allatoona with friends when he decided to go for a walk.
"Police said the person veered off the road and hit him and they had to have stopped and apparently had a radiator leak after because of the damage," said Misty Ward.
Based on evidence from the crime scene, the Georgia State Patrol is searching for the driver of a Ford F-150 XL model, likely between 1992 and 1996.
Police believe the truck suffered front-end damage, and may have been taken to a body shop for repair. The color of the truck is not known.
Misty Ward said that she is still trying to understand why someone would leave her husband on the road here. She said the unbearable act was made a little easier by the actions of a Good Samaritan.
"She blocked his body so that no one else could hit him and then she went and found help," said Misty Ward. "I want to thank her for what she did."
Since the hit-and-run, Misty Ward said that she sold the Acworth home where she and Larry started their lives together. They'd been married a year when he was killed. She now lives with Larry's parents in Floyd County.
"This person needs to be brought to justice and needs to be off the street so they don't do this to somebody else," Misty Ward said.
Anyone with information is urged to call Crime Stoppers at 404-577-TIPS (8477). A $4,000 reward is being offered.
