The Atlanta City Council has voted to spend $2.25 million to increase surveillance throughout the city.
The Atlanta Journal Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/V3dUS9 ) the vote Monday will fund more than 100 additional cameras, mostly in and around downtown. The cameras are meant to address crime that could hurt tourism and business in Atlanta.
The city has had video surveillance in its current form since last September. Atlanta's Chief Operating Officer Duriya Farooqui says providing real time information is part of the city's crime reduction strategy.
Once these 112 new cameras are up and running, there will be a total of 762 cameras monitored constantly out of the Loudermilk Video Integration Center. Atlanta's video integration is funded by grants and supported by the Atlanta Police Foundation.
