City to drop charges against student journalists

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

The city of Atlanta plans to ask a judge to drop charges against three student journalists arrested almost a year ago during an Occupy Atlanta protest.

City Solicitor Raines Carter confirmed to The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/Qm9115 ) Sunday the city plans to file a motion asking that charges be dropped against Judy Kim of Georgia State University's Signal newspaper, Alisen Redmon of Kennesaw State University's Sentinel Newspaper and Creative Loafing intern Stephanie Pharr.

The three face charges of obstruction of traffic. Police said they refused to move from a protest area at Woodruff Park on Nov. 5.

The three argued the arrests infringed their First Amendment rights and filed motions seeking to have the charges dismissed. Six national organizations for journalists on Oct. 1 asked Reed to have the charges dismissed.
