Saving money on holiday air travel

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

It's not too early to think about holiday air travel, or is it? If you're cost-conscious, then you might think to book early for a cheaper fare. Well, not so fast. You may want to wait.

The travel web site kayak.com says if you're traveling in the United States, then buying an airline ticket six months in advance will cost you 19 percent more than if you buy that ticket only a month before the flight.

For many, it's nerve-racking to wait until the last minute. So when should buy a ticket for holiday travel?

If you want the best deal for Thanksgiving travel, kayak.com says buy the last week of October, or the first week of November. For Hanukah, buy in mid-November.  For Christmas, buy that airline ticket early in December.

If you want to add more savings, fly on the holiday. Do not fly the day before or the day after.
