Hogansville man ticketed for noisy rooster

HOGANSVILLE, Ga. -

A Hogansville man is heading to court after being ticketed for his noisy rooster.

Joel Powell says he and his young sons rescued the rooster and nursed him back to health two months ago.

"My two little boys, they just love it…They done named it Ronnie Rooster. They go out here and talk to it.  And any other time, I wouldn't have fought it, but that's their pet," said Powell.

A neighbor behind Powell's home has complained to police about Ronnie Rooster's early morning crowing and its effects on her family's quality of life.  According to police, she has posted numerous videos on YouTube.

Hogansville allows residents to have chickens and roosters. Powell said that code enforcement officers ticketed him for noise violation.

"The judge set it up for trial and he let me know that if he found me guilty, he could fine me $500 and six months in jail," said Powell.

No one was at home at the noise-complaining neighbor's house when FOX 5 stopped by, but a dog was making a racket.

Powell says that when he goes to court, he'll bring a petition from neighbors who he says are crowing about his rooster.

"They don't bother me.  In fact, my kids, they enjoy them. They like them," said Lawanda Harris,  who lives near Powell.

The case goes to court in a few weeks.  Police told FOX 5's Doug Evans that they hope the neighbors can come to some resolution before then.
