State: No plans to take over Atlanta school

ATLANTA (AP) - A Georgia education official says an Atlanta high school was not in danger of being taken over by the state, despite comments made by Atlanta's school superintendent.

Georgia Department of Education spokesman Matt Cardoza tells The Atlanta Journal-Constitution (http://bit.ly/SSxvwR) that the department doesn't take over schools in Georgia.

Atlanta Public Schools Superintendent Erroll Davis told parents and community members at a meeting this week that North Atlanta High School could have been "seized" by officials, and that leadership changes had to be made.

The school system recently removed North Atlanta High's interim principal, an assistant principal and other administrators on Friday, touching off protests.

Davis said he stands by his assertion that the state would have essentially taken over the school by playing a larger role in the day-to-day functions.
