CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -
A Jonesboro city councilman facing DUI charges appeared before a judge for the first time on Thursday.
Clayton County police say Joe Compton ran over a neighbor's mailbox on Wednesday night and drove away from the scene. They say when they found him, he was lying on the ground in his driveway and appeared intoxicated.
Officers charged Compton with driving under the influence, improper lane change, striking a fixed object and hit-and-run.
He has served on the Jonesboro City Council since 2009.
Compton's attorney, James Studdard, asked for a reduced bond, citing the councilman's public service. However, Magistrate Court Chief Judge Daphne Walker decided to maintain his bond at $9,500.
Neighbors said that Compton told them he would have the mailbox repaired.
