Do flu shots do more harm than good?

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Millions of Americans skip out on flu treatment every year over concerns that getting the shot could make it worse.

The flu vaccine raised concerns on the FOX 5 Facebook page, with dozens of viewers posting their aversion to the shot.

However, Tom Skinner with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says there is no data to indicate any harmful effects from flu shots.

Skinner says flu shots have minimal side effects, which include soreness around the injection and possibly a low grade fever.

"Vaccinations against flu is the single most important thing that people can do to protect themselves," said Skinner.

The CDC says people with severe allergies to eggs should avoid flu shots since eggs are used in the processing. They say the most susceptible, small children and the elderly should get a flu shot. If in doubt, the CDC says check with your doctor.

Every year less than half the U.S. population -- about 40 to 45 percent -- gets flu shots.
