Georgia Tech officials say crime against their students is down, but one graduate student would say differently. The 25-year-old student was robbed at gunpoint on Monday morning on McMillan Street in the Home Park neighborhood, located near campus.
Police say the suspect pulled a pistol on the international student as he stood at his mailbox. The suspect got away with the student's iPhone and his wallet, with six credit cards inside.
A neighbor who didn't want to be identified told FOX 5 he witnessed the whole thing, He said the victim went to his garbage can to throw something away and that's when the guy jumped him.
The neighbor said he sprung to action and tried to help by running after the gunman. He said he chased the suspect for several blocks before he got away.
"When he got tired, he pulled the gun on me, so I just stopped," the neighbor said.
The university says they don't track off-campus crime numbers, but they do say they have sent out three alerts this year about students being robbed off campus. The school says of the alerts they've sent out, 75 percent of them have happened off-campus after 9 p.m.
Some students who live in the area told FOX 5 they are extremely concerned they will be the next target, and they're doing what they can to make sure that doesn't happen.
