DeKalb school board approves balanced calendar

Posted: Updated:
DEKALB COUNTY, Ga. -

The DeKalb County School Board approved a controversial balanced calendar for next school year in a vote on Monday night.  Under the new calendar, students will go to school for the same number of days, but they will start earlier and have more breaks during the year.

The changes are aimed at shortening the long summer vacation to prevent what some call "summer brain drain."  The new calendar takes effect for the 2013-2014 school year.

The balanced calendar concept is not new.  Henry County schools have operated under a balanced calendar for the last 10 years.
