Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Many government offices and schools are closed today in observance of Columbus Day.

Monday is a federally recognized holiday to celebrate Christopher Columbus' arrival in the Americas in 1492.

Post offices will be closed
and no mail will be delivered.

Many students have the day off. Atlanta Public Schools, Gwinnett and DeKalb Schools students will have the day off. The day is not listed as a holiday on the Cobb County Schools website. Most colleges and universities in the area will hold classes.

Some, but not all, banks will be closed. Check with your financial institution beforehand.

State offices are closed and state employees enjoy the day off.

MARTA is running a regular weekday schedule.

Most libraries in the metro area should be open.

Bottom line, it might be a good idea to check with your destination before heading off to run errands.
