Officials: 200 patients in Ga. received tainted steroids

Posted: Updated:
ATLANTA -

Georgia health officials say more than almost 200 patients in the state received steroid medication linked to a deadly meningitis outbreak. Officials have determined the tainted steroids were only used at a surgery clinic in Macon. So far, none of them have gotten sick.

Of the 189 patients that received the shots, 160 have been contacted, officials said.

"Of those that have been identified, there have not been any that have had definite illness. I think, perhaps as many as six, have had some mild symptoms, probably not related to illness, but which we don't' want to take any chances," said Georgia Public Health Director Dr. Patrick O'Neal.

The medication shipped from a specialty drug company in Massachusetts to more than 22 states. So far, 47 patients have contracted fungal meningitis in seven states. Five have died.

There has been no evidence that any of the tainted drugs were used in metro Atlanta.
