Savannah marks Oktoberfest with beer, wiener dogs

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, Ga. -

Savannah will have more than beer on tap when Georgia's oldest city celebrates Oktoberfest this weekend.

The city's downtown riverfront will be closed to traffic starting Friday, when throngs of visitors expected to show up for beer, bratwurst tasting and live music.

Probably the most popular event of the three-day festival is the wiener dog races scheduled for Saturday. Four-legged competitors will race in hearts of 10 apiece to determine which is Savannah's top dog.

Savannah-Chatham County police say they'll be keeping a close eye on the Oktoberfest celebration and urge attendees to drink responsibly. Police say they'll also be enforcing a strict midnight curfew for anybody younger than 17 years old.
