GAINESVILLE, Ga. -

Gainesville's fire chief will retire after two decades with the department in northeast Georgia.

The Times of Gainesville reports that Gainesville Fire Chief Jon Canada announced his retirement Wednesday. Canada's retirement takes effect Oct. 12.

City Manager Kip Padgett said in a statement that he appreciated Canada's leadership during the transition into a new fire station off Queen City Parkway and the creation of Georgia Search and Rescue Task Force Team One.

Padgett said that during Canada's tenure, the fire department maintained a Class II Insurance rating, one of only a few departments in Georgia to do so.

Canada said he was able "to live a childhood dream for the last 20 years."

He was named interim chief in November 2007 and was appointed full-time chief in February 2008.
