Police in central Georgia are investigating the deaths of several dogs. A war veteran says she found several of her dogs poisoned and another shot in the backyard of her Crawford County home.
The Crawford County Sheriff's Office confirmed that six of Stephanie Wammack's rescue dogs were poisoned over the weekend in Knoxville, Ga.
Wammack, a former combat medic who served with the Georgia National Guard in Afghanistan, said that four of the dogs died of poisoning and another died of gunshot wounds. She said that she found a vat of what appears to be poisoned food in her yard.
A board with nails was found when Wammack's partner stepped on it.
"I don't think it was left to hurt us, I think it was left to hurt our dogs," said Wammack.
The property adjoining Wammack's yard is used by hunters and it is currently deer season, leading Wammack to conclude that a hunter may have been behind the dogs' deaths.
"Maybe the dogs were chasing away the deer," said Wammack.
The Crawford County Sheriff's Office said that it is investigating the deaths, but no suspects or motives have been determined.
