Stolen iPhone leads APD officers to robbery suspects

Posted: Updated:

An iPhone helped Atlanta police officers track down a trio of armed robbers.   Investigators say the three stole a woman's purse early Wednesday morning, with iPhone inside it.

It happened on Wimbledon Avenue.  The victim told police that a black man wearing a dark-colored, hooded sweatshirt pointed a gun at her and demanded her purse and iPhone.  She gave officers a description of the vehicle the suspect took off in, and an officer tracking her iPhone its GPS signal also spotted a vehicle matching that description at Peachtree Street and North Avenue.

That vehicle was stopped, and police detained three people inside.  When officers sent a signal to the victim's iPhone to locate it, it started buzzing from inside the car.  A short time later, the victim identified 38-year-old Carlos Johnson as the man who robbed her.  The other two men in the SUV, 23-year-old Kelvin Gaston and 23-year-old Clifton Kilpatrick, were also arrested.

All three suspects face armed robbery charges, and Johnson is charged with possession of a firearm during felony commission.
