Authorities have released more information about the deadly stabbing of a woman in her Cartersville apartment. Investigators say 29-year-old Candice Piper was stabbed and killed on Tuesday morning, allegedly at the hands of a man she met on an internet dating site.
It happened at the Alexandria Landing Apartments, located off of Old Mill Road near Cartersville Elementary School. Police arrested 20-year-old DeAndre Hightower. FOX 5's Aungelique Proctor reports Hightower had been living with Piper for four days when she was killed.
A police source tells FOX 5 that Hightower used up to four knives to stab Piper after she did not come home Monday night. A second woman in the apartment, Rosa Williams, woke up and witnessed the attack, then fled the apartment out of fear.
Police said that they were able to locate Hightower in a wooded area behind a church close to the apartments. He had two suitcases with him when he was taken into custody.
Investigators describe Hightower as having a cool demeanor. Police now want to know if he could be connected to other crimes. They say he was only in Cartersville for a short time, and could be from Florida, Kentucky or New Jersey. Prior to meeting Piper, Hightower had been living in an Atlanta homeless shelter. They also say he had several different IDs, and they're working to learn more about him.
Family members of Piper dispute the police assertion that the two had met online.
"That's a big lie because she don't even own a computer. She doesn't have internet service up there where she lives at. I know my sister well enough she wouldn't date someone off a dating service," said David Piper, the victim's brother.
David Piper said that his sister spent the night at their parent's home on Monday just before the attack.
