Gwinnett Co. deputy resigns after DUI arrest - Atlanta News, Weather, Traffic, and Sports | FOX 5

A Gwinnett County deputy who was arrested after allegedly driving drunk in his patrol car resigned Wednesday morning.  Fox 5's Portia Bruner reports deputy Robert Christopher Matt resigned after the early morning accident in Walton County.

According to the Georgia State Patrol, Matt drove his Gwinnett County vehicle off of Georgia 81 at Double Springs Road, struck an embankment and overturned several times around 1:20 a.m.  Matt was off duty at the time of the wreck.

Troopers said that Matt drove back to his home, leaving behind an injured female passenger.

No one was around the vehicle when first responders arrived, but they later located Matt at his residence.  They found his passenger, 27-year-old Katie Lynn of Lawrenceville, walking near the crash scene.  She was taken by ambulance to Gwinnett Medical Center for treatment of her injuries.

Matt, 27, of Bethlehem, suffered cuts, scrapes, bumps and bruises.  He was taken to the Walton County Jail on charges of driving under the influence, leaving the scene of an accident, failing to maintain lane and having an open container of alcohol.

In a written statement, Gwinnett County Sheriff Butch Conway told FOX 5 he is "highly disappointed in the actions of Deputy Matt, who until this incident, had a good work record with several commendations that included the Life-Saving Award for his quick action in saving an inmate's life who attempted suicide."  Conway called this an "isolated incident" that is being dealt with in an appropriate manner.

Matt had worked as a Gwinnett County deputy since 2008 in the department's civil division.
