Atlanta city officials say they will not tolerate tire dumping in neighborhoods. Under new legislation, the police department will have new powers to crackdown on violators.
The new law calls for tracking of old tires. Truckers will have to carry a scrap tire permit. Enforcement of the law will move from the public works department to the Atlanta Police Department. Authorities will be able to conduct on-the-spot inspections. Violators will be subject to jail times and fines.
The reworked law will provide welcome relief for some residents.
SkyFOX 5 footage showed a huge pile of tires dumped in a northwest Atlanta neighborhood.
Ola Reynolds, the neighborhood president, said the tires are dumped at night. She said the tires pose a health problem because mosquitoes breed in old tire water, threatening residents with West Nile Virus.
The Reverend Larry Hill of the Church of God Ministries said that residents and businesses must get involved to help stop the problem.
