CONYERS, Ga. -
Rockdale County fire crews say two people are dead following a house fire on Tuesday.
Authorities say the fire occurred at a single-story ranch style home in the 1500 block of Mountain View Circle near Irwin Bridge Road in Rockdale County at around noon.
Firefighters discovered two bodies inside the home, according to Michael Morris of Rockdale County Fire Rescue.
Authorities said that an elderly couple lived in the home, but the bodies have not been positively identified.
Michelle Smith and Bennie Wortman said they lived next to the home for four years. They said that their 14-year-old daughter had gotten to know the elderly woman, who was handicapped.
"She was a sweet lady. My daughter loved her. She told her she'd always be like a sister to her," said Smith.
An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.
