Gwinnett businessman pleads guilty in bribery case

ATLANTA (AP) - Federal prosecutors say a Gwinnett County businessman has pleaded guilty to bribing a county official to get her to vote to approve his application to build a solid waste transfer station.

Mark Gary of Duluth pleaded guilty Monday. Sentencing has been set for Jan. 3.

Prosecutors say Gary gave John Fanning $30,000 worth of chips for an out-of-state casino in 2009 to secure the vote of Fanning's mother, Shirley Lasseter, who was a Gwinnett county commissioner.

Lasseter has been sentenced to nearly three years in prison for her role in the bribery scheme. Her son has been sentenced to nearly five years in prison.
