With school budgets tight these days and new sports facilities out of the question, thousands of high school runners have discovered a place to train where there is the good book as well as the record book.
On a Saturday in September, dozens of Georgia high schools competed in a cross country meet. It was the debut of a new course on the grounds of Heritage Christian Church in Fayette County.
Parents of runners approached the church several years ago about building the 2,000 meter course on the church's 77 acres of land with it's rolling hills, lush woodlands and 16-acre lake. The church said yes. It helped that the senior pastor is former college cross country runner himself.
Parent volunteers went to work clearing land and building an impressive wooden bridge across one end of the lake.
The new field is on church property and present are the very important symbols of their faith. Parents say the schools that train here focus on athleticism and not evangelism.
More than seven races are scheduled at the church that will bring more than 9,000 athletes and spectators to Peachtree City. That includes regional championship meets. They expect even more events next year.
