Former Fulton elections chief gets probation

DUBLIN, Ga. (AP) - The former Fulton County elections director who resigned earlier this week has been sentenced to two years of probation after failing to register for drug court.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports (http://bit.ly/RoFO74 ) that a Laurens County judge sentenced Samuel Westmoreland Friday. Westmoreland was set to be released from the Laurens County jail Saturday.

The 43-year-old Westmoreland resigned as Fulton elections director Monday after Registration and Elections Board members found out he was locked up in the Alpharetta jail after failing to comply with probation terms stemming from a 2009 DUI arrest.

He was later transferred to Laurens County, where he had been charged with DUI in a 2008 accident with a tractor trailer.
