Huge crowds are expected at Turner Field all weekend long as fans get their last chance to see Chipper Jones in action during the Atlanta Braves' regular season. The Braves will hold a special tribute for their future hall of famer before the game Friday night against the New York Mets.
A crowd of media around Chipper Jones' locker is a daily occurrence in the Braves Clubhouse, but those days are numbered. Much like his 19-year big league career that has literally been packed with glorious field moments, the 40-year-old version of Jones is in the process of writing a dramatic and memorable script to his farewell season with hopefully some of the best pages this weekend.
And that young phenom, who lived up to the expectations and the hype that came along with being the top draft pick of 1990, has relished his role though the years as an elder statesman and clubhouse leader.
Chipper's career batting average is above .300 and he is considered one of the greatest switch hitters of all time. Perhaps the thing that stands out most about the eight-time All Star and 1999 league MVP is that he has done it all in one uniform. It's the same uniform he will one day wear in Cooperstown.
As much as this baseball lifer is soaking in every last moment of his stellar career, he is also looking forward to life after baseball.
The game Friday night starts at 7:35 p.m. but anyone with tickets should be in their seats by 7 p.m. so they don't miss all the festivities. Gates to Turner Field opens
Also, parking is sold out, so anyone without pre-paid parking should take MARTA.
