MARIETTA, Ga. -

Playing in the dirt is a dream assignment for any child, but some Cobb County children are not just playing. A couple of special gardens at one school are yielding a crop of life lessons for some students.

Students at Sope Creek Elementary are getting their first lessons of the day in an unorthodox setting. They are tending to one of the school's new gardens.

Their teachers are exposing these suburban students to farming right in their school's brand new learning garden. But it isn't so much a garden as it is an outdoor classroom.

Over the course of three days, a team of employees from Lowes created two garden spaces on Sope Creek's grounds. They included a 3,600 square foot fruit and vegetable garden as well as a greenhouse.

The goal is to not only teach the children about farming, but to incorporate the things taught in the traditional classroom into the everyday life of the garden. Teachers say that the outdoor gardens can be used in just about every subject.

Scott's Miracle Grow donated all the dirt and Whole Foods donated the vegetables. The gardens were designed by the Young Landscape Architects of Atlanta, many of which are alumni of Sope Creek.

Keep Cobb Beautiful also made a donation towards the Five Senses Garden.
